Why not just build housing at the Jacobs Campus?
The old Jacobs school campus is owned by Eureka City Schools, not the City of Eureka. Their Board of Trustees is currently deciding what to do with the property. The main options include:
Hold on to the property in order to potentially develop workforce housing at some time in the future. This would leave it an empty lot maybe for years, but could mean housing in the future which would fit nicely in the neighborhood and attract more teachers to ECS. (This is what I want to see. Housing! Even if it takes years.)
Go back to the California Highway Patrol who were interested in building their new Headquarters there. This would clean up the lot relatively soon, and increase the appearance of police presence in the neighborhood, but would mean a large concrete building and parking lot with a 150 foot radio tower in between family homes and the elementary school. (Note: CHP would NOT patrol the neighborhood.)
You can tell the School Board what YOU think should be built in our neighborhood by emailing them directly.
If you want to dive down the rabbit hole, the City of Eureka has a Talk Eureka page with lots of info and media links, and a place to ask questions of the City staff..
